Cops lobby for key posts in task force

Hyderabad: With around 100 deputy superintendents of police promoted to the rank of additional superintendents of police, lobbying for suitable postings in the state has reached a crescendo.

Those who have been promoted are now making rounds of  offices of the higher ups to get a good posting. In the city, the posts that top the chart are in the additional DCP task Force, equivalent to the additional superintendent of police, and in the commissioner’s task force, which has two vacancies of additional DCP rank

The commissioner’s task force works directly under the commissioner of police, Hyderabad, and is considered the elite unit of the city police. While one additional DCP is in charge of east and south zones, the others handle the remaining west, north and central zones. The zonal teams are headed by an inspector.

The post in the task force  fell vacant after N. Koti Reddy was transferred to Mahbubabad as superintendent of police, while B. Lima Reddy, who was working as the DCP, retired a couple of months ago. At present, Additional DCP (central) Shashidhar Raju, is in charge of the task force.

“Apart from the tag of working in an elite unit responsible for tackling terrorism, rowdyism, solving sensational crimes, preventing communal riots, there are several other direct/indirect perks for officers. Already, the race to bag the plum post in the commissioner’s task force has begun,” said a police officer.

The task force also contains organised crime, including prostitution, drugs, Arab marriages, adulteration and hawala cases.

On the other hand, complaints of land settlements, money related settlements and extortion were also looked after and again. These posts  guarantee good political connections and access to higher officials in government machinery.

“It all depends on the integrity of the officer,” said a senior police official.

The post of Additional DCP in traffic, east, west and north zones too sees a lot of competition.

It is learnt that the higher ups are trying to accommodate a Muslim police officer  in the task force taking into account the terrorism related cases handled by wing in the past along with counter intelligence and National Investigation Agency.
