Hyderabad: Taking a serious view of the alleged encroachments on pavements at Siddiamber Bazaar and Mahbubgunj areas of the city, the Hyderabad High Court has directed the secretary of Hyderabad District Legal Services Authority to depute an officer for one month to observe the situation in the area every day and submit a report to the court after one month.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil Bhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan was dealing a public interest litigation filed by city resident Lakshmi Nivas Agarwal challenging the inaction of the civic authorities in removing encroachments from the pavements.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation claimed that its staff had removed the encroachments and was constantly monitoring the area to ensure that no shop-keeper again reoccupies the pavements.

The petitioner told the court that the authorities had removed a few encroachments for namesake. There were still more encroachments in the area which are causing severe inconvenience to pedestrians.

The bench posted the case to August 14 for the next hearing.

The issue of encroachments at Siddamber Bazaar has featured in the High Court in the past with the petitioners alleging that the civic body was not clearing footpaths.

The court has suggested various measures, including asking for the names of encroachers as well as appointing a special officer for the area to curb encroachments on footpaths.
