Hyderabad: Compost units too not accounted for

Hyderabad: Gated communities are supposed to have their own compost units but the GHMC does not check to see if such units are operational — which in most cases they are not.

From April last year, gated communities, hotels and restaurants that generated more than 50 kg of waste per day had to install compost units under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, issued by the Union government.

The civic body had instructed assistant medical officers for health (AMoHs) and deputy commissioners in all circles to ensure that the compost units were installed in every gated community. The corporation asked them to enlist the help of sanitation workers and ground level staff from other wings to ensure 100 percent compost unit installation in all circles.

However, neglecting its own instructions, the body has not inspected the gated communities, and only partially inspected restaurants and hotels, to check compliance.

A senior GHMC official said that soon after the announcement of making compost units mandatory, the corporation got busy with several other works, such as the monsoon action plan, which included pothole filling, road repairs and clearing water stagnation points.

He was concerned that as a result, the corporation has slipped in the Swachh Survekshan rankings and has not met the targets in revenue collection.
