Hyderabad: New chief for cop school today | Published: 17th July 2019 | Posted Date: Wednesday 17th July 2019 06:06 PM

Senior IPS officer of the Odisha cadre, Abhay

Hyderabad: He believes that for young Indian Police Service (IPS) trainees, the urge to become leaders has to come from within while training can only equip them to function as leaders. A senior IPS officer of the Odisha cadre, Abhay is all set to take over as the Director of the prestigious Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy on Wednesday.

In an exclusive interview with Deccan Chronicle from New Delhi, Abhay, who goes by the single name, said that he would be putting extra emphasis on “investigation” and “monitoring of trial” domains. “A good police officer is one who follows the law,” says the 1986 batch IPS officer.

Mr Abhay has been additional DG (Training) in the CRPF, additional DGP, Crime Branch, Odisha, and has had a long stint in the CBI. Immediately prior to his appointment as NPA director, Abhay was posted as Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). He will continue in the post till his superannuation on June 30, 2021 or until further orders.

He says all assignments at the senior level in government have their own challenges, be it CBI, CRPF or Narcotics Control Bureau. Training assignments (like NPA) are always more enriching and fulfilling. I look forward to my posting as director, NPA.

Q What changes would you like to bring about in the NPA, and in the training of IPS officers in particular?

Training has evolved over a period of time. Because of my background, I would like to put a little extra emphasis on “investigation” and “monitoring of trial” in our (NPA’s) in-service courses.

QWhat new aspects will you include in the training modules to make IPS trainees into good officers?

We will be conducting a syndicate brain storming by IPS trainees to come up with new ideas. Addition to and modification of modules is a constant process.

Q Would you be looking at training modules and facilities for police officers worldwide and try and introduce them in the police academy ?

During my career, I’ve had the opportunity to visit training academies within and outside the country. We will brain storm and introduce whatever is suitable and required at National Police Academy.
